SSE was asked to provide a sound system for a café/bar venue in the Students Union at Sheffield University.  It needed to be suitable for a variety of events such as pub quizzes, dance classes, DJ and band nights.  The system also had to be linked into an existing PA that was used for background music during the day.

Bar staff and DJ’s, as well as Technical staff, would be using the system so the user interface needed to be simple and easy to operate.  To accommodate the multiple inputs and zoning, SSE selected two BSS Soundweb 9088s for system control and a BSS 9010 “Jellyfish’ as user interface.

The system is made up of four SSE Betamax and three Yamaha AX15W single 15” for subs.  To fit in with the current décor in the venue, SSE re-carpeted the Betamax to match the colour of the room and custom-made the brackets so the speakers could be wall-mounted.  The Yamaha subs were chosen for their size and cost; they were positioned to be unobtrusive when boxed in.  Yamaha also provided the Amplifiers (P series) and Monitors (AX15M) and an Allen and Heath WZ3 16:2 is the installed console.

With the help of the in-house chippie three links to the amplifier room, from conveniently located, wall–mounted boxes were created.  These carry the FOH desk, DJ and microphone inputs to the control room, along with four additional sends and four NL4 returns for Monitors.  In addition, a 12 way bi-directional multicore was installed between 2 of these points so that a band could be set up at either end of the room with the FOH console at the opposite end.
