Predicting what an Installation will Sound Like

SSE Audio Group uses Bose Modeler® sound system software and Auditioner® playback system III to help optimise sound coverage in venue installations.

When it comes to installing a sound system - whether it's in a large concert hall or a pub or bar - it would useful if the venue operator could hear what the planned system would sound like before it's installed.

As part of SSE Audio Group's Armoury of design tools, they use Bose's Modeler® software along the Auditioner® playback system, enabling clients to do just that - hear in detail what the sound coverage will be like in every seat or corner of their venue. What's more, they can do it from the comfort of their own office and before a venue has even been completed.

Recommended Configurations
In technical terms, Modeler is a sophisticated predictive acoustical analysis program that helps you determine the recommended configuration and location of loudspectors for any venue.  With it, SSE's sound designers can create an acoustical model of the venue on a computer to help ensure that the design reduces unwanted echoes and excessive reverberation - and crucially - increases speech intelligibility and system performance.

Loudspeakers can be visually placed in an acoustically accurate room model of any size or shape.  The software allows speakers to be aimed, moved, delayed and turned on or off.  Modeler also takes into account the acoustic properties of the venues surface materials.

Once the software model is complete, accurately representing your venue and the impact of people in that space, the next step is to demonstrate what it sounds like and evaluate the options for loudspeaker selection and positioning.  This is where the Auditioner playback system comes in.

Hearing the Results
Auditioner system technology lets the client "step inside" the model and accurately experience the proposed sound system's performance. The patented Auditioner playback system uses a specific arrangement of compact near-field speakers and proprietary signal processing to deliver sound waves to the listener's ears so they hear sound as they would in the actual venue.

With the client seated in an office, they place their chin on the Auditioner system, ensuring accurate positioning.  Our designers can then select from a wide range of options to demonstrate acoustical properties of the venue.  In a large theatre, for example, you can choose any seat in the auditorium - in the stalls or up in the 'gods' and can instantly hear any changes in level and acoustic properties.

This system not only ensures that every member of a venue's audience hear's the optimal performance, it also ensures that good coverage is not achieved by over specifying and wasting money.

SSE Audio Group's Paul Todd has considerable experience using both the Modeler software and the Auditioner playback system and he uses these tools in association with other software to create accurate venue designs.  If you would like to discuss your requirements, you can contact Paul directly at SSE's Northern Office on 01274 304083
