Insomnia58 was the latest major video gaming festival, hosted by Multiplay at the Birmingham NEC over the August Bank Holiday weekend. From humble beginnings when Insomnia fitted into the back of a single 7.5t truck, the festival has grown massively. This was the biggest Insomnia to date, taking up nine halls at the exhibition centre, with a total of 66,000 gaming enthusiasts in attendance over four days.
The gaming festival features the latest in gaming techology, including drone racing, live music and the most popular event, the worlds largest pub quiz!
This was one of many festivals SSE Hire supplied over the summer (See News Story: SSE Hire - Reflections on a Summer Outdoors). Insomnia took place the weekend after SSE supplied the V Festival. This meant much of the system from V needed to be off loaded, tested and repackaged for the gaming festival in under 24 hours.
For SSE the scope of the project was to provide an audio solution for the main Insomnia stage, which was located in the largest hall of the event. Working closely with event FOH Engineer Jake Gardner, SSE Hire’s Tom Pickett designed an L-Acoustics PA system to provide even coverage throughout the arena.
This was accomplished by using two hangs of nine L-Acoustics KARA in a L/R configuration, with two SB18 subs sat above each of the hangs for low-end reinforcement. Six KARA were used for out-hangs, and across the front of the stage L-Acoustics X8’s were incorporated for front fill. Ground stacked at the front of the stage were eight SB28’s, again for low-end reinforcement.
In total four delay hangs of six L-Acoustics KIVA were flown giving the back of the hall a smooth and even coverage.
For the front of house mix Jake Gardner specified a Yamaha CL5 digital console and RIO3224 stage rack. For the on stage performers, twelve channels of Shure R Series Wireless microphones were supplied complete with DPA 4088 headsets.
Jake was delighted with how the festival had gone: “SSE System Tech Andy Yates ensured the system sounded great, with excellent coverage. For me that’s the best part; the hard work is done and then I can concentrate on the mix of the show rather than worrying if the guys at the back can hear what’s happening on stage.”
“The service we received was fantastic from start to finish. We worked with Tom from SSE for the entire project, from the initial design of the show, until the doors of the truck closed after the derig.”
Tom Pickett commented, “It was great to be invited to play a part in this project by Multiplay. Having worked closely with Senior Production Project Manager, Steve Thurkettle and Jake Gardner on many different projects over the last five years, the whole process was easy from start to finish. We were really happy with the results, and are looking forward to what the next Insomnia brings.”
